The Architecture

The Core is conceived through the philosophy of the monastery, a return to what is essential

Spirit of the House
Our ways of life, cultures and belief systems may differ, yet we are all connected by the same constants: the air we breathe, the rotation of our earth and the ceaseless, sacred dance of dust becoming soul and soul returning to dust. Across history, people have sought the vast island landscapes as places to ground themselves and return to a more essential state of being.

The Core emerges from this timeless human impulse.
A sanctuary seemingly suspended in the air
Born from this singular landscape, The Core appears to hover lightly above the terrain, evoking a sense of weightlessness. It is a space of quiet contemplation, that invites reflection on our presence within the landscape, resonating with the spirit of Serifos.
The Elements
Exposed to the Aegean winds and the intensity of the summer sun, The Core is conceived from the elements. The monolithic structure takes the form of a geometric sculpture, drawing inspiration from the architecture and philosophy of the monastery - an inward, contemplative order that settles seamlessly into the lunar-like geology of Serifos: its rugged rocks, drifting sand, endless sea and scarce, resilient vegetation.
From Monolith to Living Structure
Facing an expansive horizon where the sea and sky merge in silence, the house looks directly towards an extraordinary rock formation of Vous – its contours rising from the Aegean, like a sculpture of a resting ox. The Core appears almost paired with this dramatic rock formation as if it was placed into the landscape by an unseen hand. Part monastery, part jigsaw puzzle, part cellular structure, part otherworldly artifact.

Carved by Landscape
Open-air garden courtyards are separated by cloister-like passageways, defining and isolating each space while maintaining continuity. The three-dimensional pattern is enclosed by curvilinear walls, their forms reminiscent of naturally eroded forms. Finished in a smooth terracotta hue, the house feels like a natural extension of the land itself, drawing its color from the island’s rich mineral deposits and the primordial geology that rise from the vastness of the Aegean sea.
Solitude and Communion
The concept is rooted in architectural separation. Living quarters are placed along the periphery, allowing for peaceful co-existence, balancing solitude and togetherness. The house unfolds as a sequence of spaces where independence, privacy and shared moments coexist.

Life here is an exercise in balance - an elemental experience as rare and enduring as Serifos itself.
